Lots
of attractions, activities and sightseeing adventures are waiting
to be explored in Manitoba's smaller centres. Drive east of Winnipeg
to find the Mennonite Heritage Village museum and the Links at
Quarry Oaks golf course in Steinbach. The Whiteshell Provincial
Park area near the Ontario border offers beaches, campgrounds and
golf courses.
North of Winnipeg, the attractions are the Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site of Canada, Birds Hill Provincial Park and the white sands of Grand Beach on the east shore of Lake Winnipeg. On the west shore is the resort community of Winnipeg Beach, Gimli, the largest Icelandic settlement in the world and Hecla Island with its replica Hecla Island Icelandic Village. West of Winnipeg on the Trans Canada Highway to Portage la Prairie and then on to the Yellowhead Highway takes you to Neepawa and the Margaret Laurence Home. Continuing west leads to Clear Lake, a popular beach town with a golf course in Riding National Park. Head south from there and you come to Brandon, Manitoba's second largest city - see the contemporary and historical art exhibition at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba. Drive south of Brandon to the U.S. border and discover the International Peace Garden. |
